While investing in a major residential real estate brokerage represents a new chapter for the private equity firm Stone Point Capital, the company is no stranger to the industry. Stone Point has invested billions in the sector, and it now has a major ownership stake in Keller Williams.

Both Stone Point and Keller Williams are privately owned, and the companies did not disclose the investment amount or ownership percentage in the March 3 announcement.

About Stone Point: With offices in New York, Florida and Connecticut, Stone Point has invested over $35 billion in more than 145 companies, according to its website, with nearly 60 companies in its current portfolio.

Stone Point notes that it looks for long-term partnerships, typically investing between $75 million and $750 million, and it acquires both minority and majority stakes in late-stage companies. The firm is led by Charles Davis, chairman and co-CEO, and James Carey, co-CEO.

Real estate investments: Stone Point has invested $5.8 billion in 25 companies across the real estate sector, largely in real estate finance and mortgage firms, but also in real estate technology companies such as CoreLogic and Lone Wolf.

Stone Point and another private equity firm, Insight Partners, acquired CoreLogic in 2021 — a deal valued at $6 billion. Stone Point's undisclosed investment for a controlling stake in Lone Wolf took place in 2020.

Outside of real estate: The firm also invests in insurance, finance and healthcare companies. Notable investments include Alliant Insurance, the fifth-largest insurance broker in the U.S.; Everbank, a commercial bank with more than $40 billion in assets; and Lincoln Property Company, a property management firm with a portfolio of more than 560 million square feet of commercial space.
