Report date: July 2021

The 2021 Zillow Consumer Housing Trends Report provides a snapshot of the American homeowner. Despite the pandemic and economic changes, the profile of the typical homeowner largely remains unchanged.

Highlights

  • The typical American homeowner is 56 years old, married, has at least some college education and is most likely to live in the South.

  • 82% of homeowners have a single-family home that's about 1,725 square feet and includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

  • The annual median household income among homeowners is $77,500 compared to the overall national median of $65,700.

  • About 15% of homeowners said they plan to sell their home in the next three years, many because they want a home with upgraded features, in a different neighborhood or closer to family.

  • 31% of homeowners under age 40 said they were considering selling within that time, up significantly from 22% in 2020.
