A profile of American homeowners
The 2021 Zillow Consumer Housing Trends Report provides a snapshot of the American homeowner. Despite the pandemic and economic changes, the profile of the typical homeowner largely remains unchanged.
The typical American homeowner is 56 years old, married, has at least some college education and is most likely to live in the South.
82% of homeowners have a single-family home that's about 1,725 square feet and includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The annual median household income among homeowners is $77,500 compared to the overall national median of $65,700.
About 15% of homeowners said they plan to sell their home in the next three years, many because they want a home with upgraded features, in a different neighborhood or closer to family.
31% of homeowners under age 40 said they were considering selling within that time, up significantly from 22% in 2020.
