During a week that saw REMAX's business change forever, the franchisor lost its co-founder, Gail Liniger. REMAX announced Liniger's death on Thursday. The real estate veteran was 81 years old.

A legacy that grew to global proportions

Gail and her husband, Dave Liniger, launched REMAX in 1973. Over the next 50-plus years, the couple grew the company into one of the world's most recognizable real estate franchisors, which now spans 120 countries and territories and is home to more than 145,000 agents.

That legacy was carried forward this week when Real closed its acquisition of REMAX in a $880 million deal that created a combined publicly traded company now known as the Real REMAX group.

Dave Liniger said in a statement that his late wife was "my partner in every sense of the word."

"She was crucial to the success of REMAX, and in many ways was the steady force behind everything we built."

REMAX's growth trajectory over the decades served as an example of what a successful brokerage franchise model could look like, although in recent years the company's revenue had dipped and U.S. agent count declined. With a focus on recruiting experienced, top agents, the company with the iconic balloon branding quickly became recognized across dozens of countries.

From adversity to leadership

In 1983, Gail survived a seaplane crash in Canada that left the pilot dead and the sole other passenger severely injured. Gail suffered partial paralysis and shattered bones, with doctors saying she might never walk again.

In a testament to her strong spirit and determination, she made a remarkable recovery and went on to attend the annual REMAX convention in Florida that year.

In 1991, Gail took the helm at REMAX as CEO. By 2018, she stepped back from daily operations, then retired from the REMAX Holdings Board of Directors in 2023 and was named vice chair emerita.

Mourning an industry visionary

Messages of rememberance swept the internet on Thursday at the news of Gail's passing. Real REMAX Group Chief Marketing Officer Abby Lee in a statement praised Gail's "grace and grit," and noted that her influence on REMAX and the industry at large was "immeasurable."

Victor Lund, founding partner and co-CEO of WAV Group, wrote on LinkedIn that the industry should remember Gail's "great contributions as a person, philanthropist, and industry leader."

Marilyn Miller, an advisor at Scan Global Realty, called Gail a "business visionary, a leader, a survivor," and noted that although companies like REMAX evolve over time, "legacy remains."

"Rest in peace, Gail Liniger," Miller wrote. "Your legacy will continue through generations of real estate professionals."
