How real estate professionals can do more with AI

You don’t need to be a tech expert to get more comfortable with AI. You just need a place to start.

Nearly every day, there's a new headline-producing update, prediction or product on AI.

For real estate professionals, it can feel overwhelming. Many may have used AI in simple ways, like writing a listing description or cleaning up an email. But when you're not a tech expert, how can you do more?

Here are a few steps to expand your comfort level and use of AI.

Start with better prompts

So many times, users submit a document and tell AI to "edit this." But the more details AI has, the more it can tailor responses — and the better your results will be.

For example, if you are writing a listing description, don't tell AI to "make it better." Tell AI who you are, what you need, what's unique about the house or neighborhood, what platform it's written for and what tone you want to strike. Prompts aren't a few words; they're a few paragraphs.

If typing all of that feels like a chore, try the voice function. One of the easiest ways to get comfortable with AI is to talk to it naturally, the same way you would explain a task to a colleague or assistant.

Move beyond content

Take the information you have, then push it further and move beyond edits and content development.

Ask your AI platform to brainstorm open house ideas. Ask it how to improve your follow-up process. Ask it to review a seller presentation and tell you what is missing.

One of the best prompts is to ask AI to critique your work. Instead of saying, "Make this better," try asking, "What is weak about this?" or "What questions would a seller still have after reading this?"

You can even have AI improve your AI prompts by asking, for example, "What information do you need from me to improve my prompt?"

Build an AI agent for tasks

This is where the real AI work can happen. An AI chatbot takes a prompt and provides an answer. AI agents, not to be confused with real estate agents, are not just a chat but a developed AI system that has the materials, background and instructions to complete specific tasks on its own. And the best part is you can use AI to build an AI agent specific to you and the support you need.

Start by identifying a task you do regularly that could be led or managed by AI. Maybe it's preparing a listing presentation or developing an analytics report for a seller.

Collect all the materials that are relevant to that task, such as past reports, report templates, market insights or notes. Then instruct AI that you want to build an agent that handles this specific task and ask it what questions it would have for you to develop the instructions for that AI agent.

Once you have your instruction, upload it with the relevant materials and put it to work. Be sure to adjust the instructions and provide feedback as it gets started, so it can learn exactly what you need.

The biggest opportunity for AI is in the time it gives back, helping professionals spend less time on administrative work and more time on the relationships at the center of the business. AI can have a meaningful impact in real estate, but that only becomes possible when we know how to use it fully.

You do not need to master AI overnight. Start with one task, get comfortable and keep building.
