Realtor.com the latest portal to launch search app in ChatGPT
The home-search company joins Zillow and Redfin with an AI integration designed to keep MLS data safe and agents central to the conversation.
Key points:
- The app was built to answer "pre-search" questions about affordability, neighborhoods and more, then route high-intent buyers back to Realtor.com where they can connect with an agent.
- Listings viewed via ChatGPT will only include a preview of the property details, and no MLS data will be used to train the chatbot's model, Realtor.com noted.
- “We brought real estate listings to the internet. Now we’re bringing them to AI," said Realtor.com CEO Damian Eales.
Realtor.com has officially launched its home-search app in ChatGPT, the portal announced today. It's the latest move in a tech-based race to capture consumers at the earliest stage of the homebuying journey.
The app allows users to ask questions about home affordability, neighborhoods and housing options within ChatGPT, but then "intentionally routes high-intent buyers back to Realtor.com" to explore listings in more detail, connect with agents and schedule tours, according to a news release.
"For 30 years, Realtor.com has led every major technology shift in how Americans search for homes," Damian Eales, CEO of Realtor.com, said in the announcement. "Today, AI represents the next transformational opportunity to simplify the home journey and deliver greater clarity and confidence to consumers."
The launch continues a trend that began in late 2025, when Zillow introduced the first real estate app in ChatGPT, followed by a similar integration earlier this year from Redfin.
Capturing the 'pre-search' moment
Within ChatGPT, the Realtor.com app is designed to help potential buyers navigate the "pre-search" phase of homebuying, when they have basic questions about affordability, neighborhoods and whether to rent or buy, the company explained.
Users can establish a housing budget, compare neighborhoods and refine their search criteria through dialogue rather than traditional filters. The app includes features to guide early-stage shoppers, including:
Affordability calculator and conversational budgeting tool
Neighborhood discovery
Tailored prompts to transition general questions into search criteria
Once potential buyers find properties that match their needs, the app directs them to Realtor.com where they can get more details and contact an agent.
'Agents and MLSs at the center'
While some in the industry have raised concerns that integrating real estate apps in ChatGPT or other AI engines could lead to potential licensing violations or data misuse, Realtor.com — which says it prioritizes direct MLS relationships over internet data exchange (IDX) feeds — is committing to protecting MLS data and preserving agent roles, according to Anna Marie Castiglioni, head of Realtor.com Next.
The integration "is designed to keep agents and MLSs at the center of the real estate transaction, while raising the visibility of their listings," Castiglioni said.
Listings viewed within ChatGPT will only include a preview of the property details, and the use of MLS listing data to train the chatbot's model is "strictly prohibited," Realtor.com noted.
AI as the next search frontier
In addition to its new ChatGPT integration, Realtor.com has rolled out several AI-powered features over the past year, including natural language search, automated listing tags and visual tools.
According to a recent company survey, 82% of Americans are using AI tools for real estate insights, though real estate agents remain the most trusted source of housing information.
"Our commitment is to make Realtor.com omnipresent wherever consumers are having conversations about real estate," said Mickey Neuberger, chief consumer and marketing officer.
